Bulgaria meets criteria to join the euro area on 1 January 2026

The Commission concluded that Bulgaria is ready to adopt the euro as of 1 January 2026. The final decision will on the adoption will be taken by the Council of the EU, following discussions in the Eurogroup and the European Council, and after the opinions by the European Parliament and the ECB.

EU survey: record high trust in the EU and strong support for common defence

EU adopts €150 billion defence loan instrument

The Commission welcomes the agreement in the Council on the Security for Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument. The Commission will raise up to €150 billion on the capital markets, providing financial levers to EU countries to ramp up investments in key defence areas.
